Position Overview
Global Language System is seeking qualified American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters to support a federal contract with the U.S. Navy Submarine Force Museum. The interpreter will provide onsite interpretation services to facilitate communication between hearing and hearing-impaired personnel in professional, training, and operational settings.
This role requires high professionalism, accuracy, and adherence to RID standards and ethics.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide accurate and impartial ASL interpretation (English ↔ ASL / Signed English)
- Support:
- Meetings (team, supervisory, administrative)
- Training sessions and workforce development programs
- Special events, ceremonies, and briefings
- Maintain confidentiality of all interpreted information
- Arrive 15 minutes prior to scheduled assignments
- Collaborate with project coordinators and client stakeholders
- Follow RID Code of Professional Conduct
Work Schedule
- Primarily Monday – Friday (7:30 AM – 4:00 PM)
- Assignments range from:
o Minimum: 2 hours
o Maximum: 8 hours/day
- Some urgent requests (24–48 hours notice) may occur
- Potential need for two interpreters for assignments exceeding 3 hours
Location Requirements
- Primary site:
- U.S. Navy Submarine Force Museum – Groton, CT
- Secondary site:
Naval Station Newport – Newport, RI
- Occasional assignments within Eastern Connecticut regionMinimum Qualifications
- RID Certification (Required)
- Minimum 3 years of professional ASL interpreting experience
- Strong knowledge of:
- Professional/workplace terminology
- Ability to interpret technical or government-related content
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to pass background investigation
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in government or military environments
- Familiarity with U.S. Navy terminology
- Prior experience in training, workplace, or corporate interpreting
