Language Tutor Interest Form
The Critical Languages Program (CLP) offers less commonly taught languages (LCTLs) which are not available in traditional departments and formats at the University of Arizona. In partnership with other academic departments, CLP also offers non-credit tutoring in various foreign languages. We also often seek to stand up languages on demand.
The Critical Languages Program seeks part-time language tutors to conduct weekly non-credit tutorial sessions. The candidate must be a fluent proficient speaker of the target language, able to work professionally with small group tutorial sessions (or 1:1) and act as a liaison between the students and examiner. Content focus may include speaking, pronunciation, grammar, writing, reading, and study skills development. Interested candidates should fill out this form with all required information.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Schedule tutorial sessions and submit to CLP office
- Design lesson plans based on student(s) needs and expectations. Sessions may be 1:1 or with a small group or class.
- Conduct tutorial sessions in the use/practice of the target language
- Provide communication and feedback to students throughout the scheduled tutoring sessions
- Provide summary of completed session to critlang@arizona.edu
- Maintain/update tutorial session calendar
- Maintain communication with CLP staff
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional experience
- 1 year relevant work experience required
- Native or near-native fluency in target language
- Applicants must have experience effectively communicating in English as well, both verbally and in writing
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule
- Must have reliable internet for remote online tutoring
- If teaching minors (under age 18), have a current fingerprint clearance card and/or willingness to complete mandatory UA training through Youth Safety.
Preferred Qualifications
- Teaching and/or tutoring experience of a foreign language
- Tutoring experience in self-instructional model courses
- Bachelor’s degree or higher related to second-language teaching or willingness to complete a short online certificate training course (provided by CLP) on foreign language teaching.
This is an hourly consultant position, not employment with the UA
Note: UA students who are on a student visa and are employed at the UA for .5 FTE or higher are not eligible to tutor during the academic year.
