At AccessBridge, we work with credentialed independent contractors who bring professional qualifications, subject-matter expertise, and a genuine commitment to the communities we serve — Deaf, hard-of-hearing, DeafBlind, and multilingual individuals whose access to communication is a civil right, not a courtesy.
Position Overview
As a freelance CART provider, you will work independently to transcribe live spoken communication in real time, making events such as lectures, meetings, conferences, and other settings fully accessible to individuals who are Deaf or hard of hearing. This is an independent contractor (1099) role offering flexible scheduling based on client demand.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide real-time captioning services in a variety of settings using realtime software, delivering immediate verbatim translation of spoken language into text so consumers can read on displayed devices as it is created.
- Prepare for assignments by researching technical terminology and building custom software dictionaries relevant to each client engagement.
- Coordinate with our scheduling team and, when applicable, with on-site event coordinators or technical staff to ensure seamless service delivery.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all client interactions.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to provide realtime captioning at a minimum of 200 words per minute with at least 98.5% accuracy, effectively listening for continuity, sense, and detail.
- Proficiency with steno software such as Stenocat, Case Catalyst, Eclipse, or equivalent.
- Must be steno-trained or voice-trained (stenomask/speech recognition).
- Must own captioning equipment including a steno machine, laptop, full-version translation software/license, and required accessories such as a stand and cables needed to provide CART services.
- Reliable high-speed internet connection for remote assignments.
- Strong understanding of the unique communication needs of Deaf and hard-of-hearing consumers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of CART experience.
- Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification through the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) or equivalent credential (e.g., CRC, CBC).
- Experience captioning in specialized fields such as legal, medical, or technical/academic environments.
